I believe in keeping taxes as low as possible while maintaining the excellent services our residents expect. That takes careful planning, responsible spending and the wisdom to distinguish between needs and wants.
Arden Hills is in strong financial shape, and I am proud of the role I have played in getting us there. But I also understand that many families are feeling the pressure of higher costs. City property taxes are only one part of a household budget, alongside rising costs for food, gas, housing and other necessities. Every taxpayer dollar matters.
As Mayor, I take a long-term view. I ask: Is this something we truly need? What will it cost—not just today, but years from now? Is there a smarter way to accomplish it? Sometimes leadership means making difficult choices and saying not yet when something isn’t affordable.
That approach has helped the City plan ahead for maintenance and repairs rather than allowing small problems to become expensive ones. Under my leadership, the city created a 20-year maintenance plan to protect our infrastructure, maintain services and avoid burdening residents with large unexpected costs.
I am transparent with residents. It is important to note that, contrary to what my opponent has been saying, my opponent voted along with Councilmember Holden and myself to reach a majority for the levy limit. In city government, compromise is a necessity and to reach a majority for a levy amount, my vote was for a higher amount than I would have liked.
The City has clear and understandable budgets and financial statements. Arden Hills has earned national recognition for the quality and accessibility of its financial reporting, including financial report awards received annually since 2006. I have championed improvements in how the city communicates financial information so residents can better understand how their tax dollars are being used. Each year I have published in our City’s newsletter, “The Popular Annual Financial Report,” which informs the community in a simple, easy-to-read format.
I will continue to lead with experience, good judgment and a commitment to living within our means. I will look for partnerships and cost-sharing opportunities, carefully evaluate major projects, and make sure we get the greatest possible value for every taxpayer dollar.
Responsible financial leadership isn’t about spending the most. It’s about making wise choices, planning ahead and delivering the services our community needs—while keeping Arden Hills financially strong.
